As the world around us shifts, so do the ways in which companies engage in marketing, and a graduate student organization at The Ohio State University is following these changes and trends in the marketing world. Each year, the Fisher College of Business’s Association of Marketing Professionals (AMP) awards the honor of ‘Marketer of the Year’ to a company at the forefront of marketing. This award is given to a company whose work has demonstrated excellence, innovation and success in creating, communicating and delivering value to its consumers. Such an acknowledgement is extremely unique, and Ohio State is the only university that recognizes such accomplishments with this prestigious award.
In the past, extremely successful companies have received and accepted the Marketer of the Year Award. 2014’s recipient was none other than Beats By Dre, a popular audio company focused primarily on headphones and speakers that has since been acquired by Apple. Continuing the trend of excellence, the recipient of this year’s Marketer of the Year Award has experienced extreme success over the past few years by approaching marketing much differently than most organizations. This company has infused innovation and creativity in its creation, communication and delivery of value and, in a way, is redefining the industry it lives in. Fisher AMP’s 2015 Marketer of the Year award is being presented to GoPro.
GoPro’s SVP of Marketing, Paul Crandell, describes it best when he says that GoPro is ‘a movement.’ The company is focused on inspiring people by capturing beautiful and exciting moments in life. From the creation of the GoPro camera itself, with extremely high image quality and strong supporting software for editing & viewing, to the consumer experience, a GoPro enables people to communicate in their own, unique way. Most marketers must develop the experience factor for their products, but with GoPro, the product itself is the experience. Through consumer generated images, the company produces the most engaging content in the world and has created a social community that is equally impactful. Each camera contributes to this social community and has allowed the company to develop ground-breaking levels of engagement on Instagram and Facebook.
GoPro cameras are built to capture real moments, including anything from scuba diving and wakeboarding to skydiving and even strapping one to your dog. The moments recorded and the marketing to support this is built around value that is authentic and dynamic as consumers’ interests and behaviors evolve. However, GoPro isn’t finished. Consumers engage in countless activities each day, and it is clear that there are even more opportunities for a GoPro to capture exciting and meaningful moments. Recently, the company integrated the product into the runways of New York Fashion Week.
The Marketer of the Year Award will be accepted by GoPro at Fisher AMP’s annual symposium event: the Columbus Advertising & Marketing Powwow (CAMP). CAMP will take place on Saturday, March 27th 2015 from 12:00-4:30pm and will host over 300 students, alumni, professionals and entrepreneurs. The theme of this flagship event will be focused on the future of marketing in an increasingly digital & data-driven world, with nationally recognized keynote speakers providing insights on trends and strategies in these areas. Distinguished speakers include John Gerzema, CEO at BAV Consulting, Kevin Richardson, SVP Consulting Services at Nielsen Marketing Analytics, and a panel of Columbus marketing executives from some of the most exciting brands such as Piada, Jeni’s Ice Creams, and Homage.
